learner's permit

You must possess a temporary instructional permit (TIP) and complete all required testing before becoming eligible for issuance of a learner’s permit. 


  • You must be at least fifteen before a learner’s permit can be issued.
  • A learner’s permit must be held for a minimum of 180 days, unless the applicant is 17 years of age or older.
  • The required knowledge and skills tests are administered by the driver education provider. An 80% is the minimum passing score for the knowledge test.* 
  • A vision test will be administered prior to the issuance of a learner’s permit. You must have 20/40 vision in one or both eyes to pass. 


*If the applicant does not have a good understanding of the written English language they may bring a translator to assist with any class knowledge (written) tests except CDL.


ADULTS

  • One primary document such as a certified birth certificate, Louisiana ID card, current passport, or current military ID
  • Verification of your Social Security Number is required. This can be your Social Security Card, W2 form, or a print out from the Social Security Administration verifying the number. If you do not have a Social Security Number, a letter from the Social Security Administration must be present. The number may also be given verbally.
  • One additional form of identification such as a photo work ID, high school diploma, insurance card, etc.
  • Proof of Address
  • Certificate of Successful Completion received from the driver’s education class you attended must be presented when graduating from a TIP.

MINORS

  • Certified birth certificate
  • Verification of your Social Security Number is required
  • Proof of Address
  • Certificate of Successful Completion received from the driver’s education class you attended must be presented when graduating from a TIP.
  • Non-immigrant alien requires additional information
  • A custodial parent or legal guardian must be present to sign the application.
  • The parent must present identification and the legal guardian must also present legal documentation verifying the guardianship.

All applicants age 15 and 16 must participate in the graduated licensing program and must start with a learner’s permit. The applicant is authorized to drive with a licensed parent, guardian, or adult at least 21 years of age, or a licensed sibling at least 18 years of age or older. The applicant must pass a vision and knowledge test.

Age 15

Maintain learner’s permit for a minimum of 180 days AND until they reach the age of 16 when they may apply for an intermediate license.

Age 16

Maintain learner’s permit for a minimum of 180 days OR until they reach the age of 17 when they may apply for an intermediate or full license.

Age 17

Eligible for either a learner’s permit or a full license. To obtain a full license, vision, knowledge and road skills tests must be successfully completed.


Tests

Tests must be successfully completed before the issuance of a license. The knowledge and skills tests are administered by the driver education provider. All road skills tests must be performed at a driving school.


Learner's Permit

Applicants must pass a vision test and have 20/40 vision in one eye and also pass a 40 question test with a minimum score of 80%.


Full License

Must pass vision, knowledge and road skills tests.
